Root Canals at Wave Dental Specialists

While root canals have a bad reputation, the procedure is nothing to fear. Our team of dental experts includes in-office endodontists who specialize in endodontic services, including root canal treatment, endodontic surgery, and other procedures. We can save injured or infected teeth to prevent the need for extraction and restore your beautiful, healthy smile.

Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is a common dental procedure performed to save teeth that are injured, infected, or otherwise at risk of being lost. The procedure involves removing inflamed or infected pulp from the inside of the root canals of a tooth and sealing it to prevent future infection. We perform root canals to relieve pain, treat inflammation, and prevent infection from spreading to other healthy teeth.

Root Canal Retreatment

If a tooth has undergone endodontic treatment in the past and has not healed or continues to cause pain, retreatment may be necessary. The material used to fill the root canals is removed and the root is treated once more before being sealed. While uncommon, root canal retreatment is performed to save teeth and keep them from being pulled.

Surgical Endodontics

In cases of severe inflammation or infection, a surgical procedure (called an apicoectomy) may be performed. A small incision is made in the gums to expose the bone tissue underneath, where a tiny opening is created at the root of the affected tooth. This is a simple procedure performed under local anesthesia and sedation as needed.

Endodontics

Endodontists are specially trained dentists who maintain teeth through procedures performed on the inner tissues of the teeth (called dental pulp or nerve). The goal of endodontic therapy is to save teeth and keep them from being lost or removed due to injury, infection, or diease.

While you will typically experience pain as a result of your condition, the root canal procedure itself is very comfortable. Your endodontist will use local anesthesia to numb your tooth and the treatment area surrounding it. Our team will also administer sedation is needed if you have issues with anxiety, relaxing in the dentist's chair, or becoming sufficiently numb.

Common causes of pain in your mouth include tooth decay that has penetrated the interior of the tooth, chips or cracks in the enamel, disease, or infection.

The common signs of needing a root canal include serious tooth pain, sensitivity to temperature, pain when biting or chewing, abscesses of your gums, darkening of the affected tooth, and tenderness or swelling of the gums near the tooth.

Whether your insurance covers the cost of root canal procedures depends on your carrier and individual plan. Many dental insurance plans cover 50-80 percent of the cost of a root canal after the deductible has been met. Our office will verify your insurance coverage and help you make the most of all owed benefits.

As with any procedure, the full length of your root canal treatment will depend on your unique condition and care needs. The average root canal takes 30-60 minutes to complete, while more complex cases can take up to 90 minutes. You can expect the duration of your treatment, from planning to the procedure itself, to take 2-3 office visits.
